Barton Mines Garnet Mine Tour is 4.5 mi. n. of North Creek on SR 28, then w. 5 mi. on Barton Mines Rd. One of the largest garnet mines in the world, it was begun in 1878. In 1983, the main mining operation moved to nearby Ruby Mountain. One-hour guided tours feature the original site and include a walk through an open-pit mine 400 feet below the summit of Gore Mountain, a 15-minute lecture and an opportunity to collect rocks and gems. Guided tours are available.
Season pass $13.95; $12.95 (ages 60-89); $9.95 (ages 7-14). Rocks collected cost $1 per pound.
Hours: Tours Mon.-Sat. 9:30-5, Sun. 11-5, late June-Labor Day; Sat. 9:30-5, Sun. 11-5, day after Labor Day-Columbus Day weekend. Last tour begins 1 hour before closing.
