Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge is 3 mi. s. on Crossbay Blvd. off Belt Pkwy. exit 17S in the Gateway National Recreation Area. The 9,155-acre refuge contains varied habitats, including freshwater ponds, marshes, bays, fields, wooded areas and islands. It is a major stopover for migrating birds; some 330 species have been recorded since the mid-1950s. A 1.75-mile walking trail allows visitors to experience a natural setting within New York City.
