Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site, 504 W. Main St., was the site of two battles in the War of 1812, during which Sackets Harbor served as headquarters for the Army of the Northern Frontier and the Navy of the Great Lakes. The restored commandant's house dates from 1850. Behind the house the 1812 Navy Exhibit depicts a sailor's life aboard the Jefferson during the war. A visitors center is at the west end of Main Street. Guided tours are available. Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
$3; $2 (ages 62+ and students and military with ID); free (ages 0-12).
Hours: Grounds and trails open daily dawn-dusk. Historic buildings open Mon.-Sat. 10-5, Sun. 1-5, July 1-early Sept.; Wed.-Sat. 10-5, Sun. 1-5, Memorial Day weekend-June 30. Living-history camp Wed.-Sat. 10-4:30, late June to mid-Aug. Last admission 30 minutes before closing. Phone ahead to confirm schedule.
