Stony Point Battlefield State Historic Site is 8 mi. s. of the Bear Mountain bridge off US 9W on Park Rd. This was the location of a successful midnight assault by the American Corps of Light Infantry, commanded by Brig. Gen. Anthony Wayne, against a British garrison in July 1779. A museum presents exhibits. On weekends May through October, interpreters in period dress offer demonstrations with muskets and artillery; cooking and the daily tasks of camp life also are portrayed. Picnicking is permitted.
Hours: Grounds Mon.-Sat. 9-5, Sun. noon-5, mid-Apr. through Oct. 31; Mon.-Fri. 10-4, rest of year (weather and staffing permitting). Museum Wed.-Sat. 10-4:30, Sun. and Mon. holidays noon-4:30, mid-Apr. through Oct. 31. Closed Jan. 1, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Phone ahead to confirm schedule. Allow 1 hour minimum.
