United States Military Academy is off SR 9W. The West Point Visitor Center just outside Thayer Gate (South Post) offers orientation films, exhibits, a replica of a cadet barracks room, maps and brochures. Departing from the visitor center, West Point Tours offers 1.25- and 2-hour narrated combined bus and walking tours of the grounds and some buildings. Tour highlights include Cadet Chapel, which features stained-glass windows and one of the largest church organs in the world; Old Cadet Chapel, built in 1836; Trophy Point, a repository of war relics dating from the American Revolution; and the Plain, a large cadet parade field. Chapel of the Most Holy Trinity is Norman Gothic in style and patterned after St. Ethelred's Carthusian abbey church in England. Note: A government-issued photo ID is required for anyone over age 16 for all tours. Guided tours are available.
Visitor center free. The 1.25-hour bus tour $15; $12 (ages 2-11). Two-hour tour $17; $15 (ages 2-11). Tour reservations are recommended.
Hours: Visitor center daily 9-4:45. The 1.25-hour bus tour departs daily 9:30-3:30, Apr.-Oct.; Mon.-Fri. at 10, 11:30, 1 and 2:30, Sat.-Sun. at 9:45, 10:30, 11:15, 12:45, 2:15 and 3:45, in Nov.; Mon.-Fri. at 10:30, noon, 1:30 and 3, Sat.-Sun. at 11 and 1:30, rest of year. Two-hour tours depart daily at 10:45 and 2:30, June-Oct.; Sat.-Sun. and Fri. after Thanksgiving at noon and 2:30, in Nov. No tours are given on home football Saturdays and during graduation week. Closed Jan. 1, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
