Thomas Howe Demonstration Forest, 1 km e. on Highway 1, has a 5-kilometre (3.1-mi.) hiking trail and three interpretive walking trails; the forest types and forestry practices of central Newfoundland are showcased. Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are available when there is enough snow. The forest is named for forest advocate Thomas Howe, the province's first Chief Woods Ranger, who was born in England in 1860 and came to Newfoundland when he was 17. An interpretive center has trees and forestry equipment, as well as a display about Howe.

Guided tours are available. Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
