Alfa Planetarium (Planetario Alfa) is s.w. of downtown via Av. Manuel Gómez Morín to Av. Roberto Sada #1000. Housed in a building that looks like a leaning cylinder, this large walled complex contains, in addition to one of Mexico's better planetariums, a museum with an excellent collection of pre-Hispanic art, a large aquarium, a domed IMAX theater and multiple hands-on, interactive displays demonstrating lightning, optics and mechanical sciences. On the grounds is an outdoor aviary and plenty of tree-shaded green areas. Free bus service to the complex departs from Alameda Park, just west of Avenida Pino Suárez between avenidas Aramberri and Washington, Tues.-Fri. at 2:30, 3:30 and 4:30, Sat.-Sun. on the half-hour from 10:30 to 5:30. Note: The weather in Monterrey can be extremely hot from May until September; plan accordingly. Food is available. Time: Allow 2 hours minimum.
Museum admission 70 pesos (about $3.80 U.S.); free (ages 0-3). Museum plus IMAX film 100 pesos (about $5.40 U.S.); free (ages 0-3).
Hours: Tues.-Fri. 2:30-7, Sat.-Sun. 10:30-7. Phone ahead to confirm schedule.
