Red Bay National Historic Site, 11 Main Hwy., chronicles the history and culture of the mid-16th century Basque whaling port. A short boat trip to Saddle Island allows visitors to tour the remnants of the whaling station and a historic cemetery. Artifacts include remains of rendering ovens, cooperages, wharves, temporary living quarters and restored Basque whaling boats called chalupa. Whale-bone deposits also are on display.
