AAA Editor Notes
Avalon Wilderness Reserve is about 100 km (62 mi.) s. off Hwy. 10 on Horse Chops Rd. The 1,070-square-kilometre (413-sq.-mi.) reserve protects a small number of Avalon caribou (the southernmost woodland caribou herd in the world). With its landscape of barrens, thickets, small forests, bogs, ponds and rivers, the reserve is a good place for canoeing, fishing, hiking, hunting, photography, primitive camping and wildlife observation.

Note: The reserve is in a remote location; there are no facilities, amenities or trail markers within its borders. It is accessed via several rough gravel roads. Informing others of a trip to the reserve and an estimated return date is strongly recommended. Cell phone coverage is intermittent in the area. An entry permit, available at any provincial park office and by mail, must be obtained before visiting.

Recreational activities are permitted. Picnicking is permitted.
