Basilica Cathedral Church and Museum is at 200 Military Rd. at Harvey Rd. and Bonaventure Ave. The cornerstone for the Basilica Cathedral of St. John the Baptist was laid in 1841 and construction was far enough along in 1850 to allow masses to take place; in 1855 the cathedral was completed and consecrated. Built in the shape of a Latin cross, the church is noted for its statuary, ornate ceiling design and stained glass windows.

Attached to the church is the Basilica Cathedral Museum, housed in an 1859 library that is said to be the oldest public library and reading room in Newfoundland. The museum contains an extensive collection of artifacts, including books, furniture, liturgical garments, paintings and sacred vessels.
