North Carolina Zoo, 6 mi. s. on SR 159, following signs to 4401 Zoo Pkwy., contains more than 1,600 animals and 60,000 plants from North America and Africa. The Watani Grasslands Reserve features exhibits with African elephants, lions, southern white rhinoceroses and 10 species of African antelope. The free-flight R.J. Reynolds Forest Aviary contains 120 birds and more than 3,000 tropical plants.

The North Carolina Streamside habitat displays such indigenous wildlife as fish, snakes, frogs, otters and bobcats. Other exhibits include red wolves, bison, elk, seals, roadrunners, ocelots, and grizzly and black bears as well as a polar bear habitat.

A tram system throughout the park is free. The AirHike ropes course and guided 45-minute Zoofari tram tour, which travels through the 38-acre Watani Grasslands exhibit, also are available. Special events are held throughout the year.
