Asheville Museum of History is adjacent to the Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College and is located in the 1840s Smith-McDowell House at 283 Victoria Rd. Built in the 1840s by affluent businessman James McConnell Smith, the three-level house contains rooms furnished in various 19th-century styles that include an 1850s bedroom, an 1860s sitting room and an 1880s parlor.

The museum features five galleries with permanent and temporary exhibits covering thousands of years of Western North Carolina history. Highlights include an interactive timeline that gives an overview of the region's history using stories, photos, and artifacts.

Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
