Aurora Fossil Museum is at 400 Main St. Displays feature marine fossils including the giant shark C. megalodon, discovered in the nearby phosphate mine, and other fossils and minerals from around the world. Native American displays showcase artifacts from eastern North Carolina and Mayan artifacts from Honduras.
A 12-minute video explains the mining process and the abundance of marine fossils in the area. Outside the museum is the Fossil Park, where visitors can search for fossils of ancient whales and sharks as well as shells and coral in soil material donated by the local phosphate mine.
