The Charlotte Museum of History, 3 mi. e. of downtown at 3500 Shamrock Dr., between Eastway Dr. and Sharon Amity Rd., was originally founded to preserve the 1774 Hezekiah Alexander Homesite. The original stone Hezekiah Alexander house, built by one of the signers of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence, is the oldest surviving house in the county and contains furniture and artifacts dating from the late 18th century. Also on the site are a re-created tobacco barn and a kitchen. Museum gallery exhibits include Solving the Rock House Mysteries and Charlotte Neighborhoods.

Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
