Family with Young Children
Pros: Beautiful hotel--very well kept, friendly, comfortable. Breakfast was fantastic and indoor pool was nice.
Cons: We wished there were more casual places to eat nearby. We ended up at Dairy Queen, as it was within walking distance. The hotel is owned by a local vineyard with a fancy restaurant, but we would've had to drive a few exits to find something kid friendly.
Traveling as Couple
My wife and I decided on this location because the beaches were too crowded and the hotels too expensive this time of year. We just picked this location at random and discovered a gem of a destination. The family that owns Shelton Vineyards built this hotel, a bank, convenience store and Dairy Queen all in the same location. Everything is very nice and well decorated. The town of Dobson is only a few minutes down the road and although the population seemed pretty sparse there are several restaurants. We ate at The Lantern restaurant on Main St. twice and were very pleased. The owner, Betty White (not the actress), her staff and customers were all very friendly and the food was excellent. One restaurant that you must try is The Depot at Cody Creek. It's about a 10 to 15 minute drive from the hotel and the food is fantastic. We were expecting a hole in the wall, but instead found a huge location complete with an Old Timey general store, stone church building, stone gazebo, and large wedding/reception facilities on the grounds. The drive through an actual covered bridge was really cool, too. The wait time was about 30 to 40 minutes for a table, but well worth the wait. A meal for two will run between $40 and $50. Their desserts are fantastic! The tour through Shelton Vineyards was really nice and only cost $5 per person. That price covers the tour (about 30 minutes) and includes a free wine glass and your choice of 5 wine tastings. Recommend going during the 6 week harvest season beginning in August if you want to see the grapes being harvested. No bottling or anything was going on during our tour, but our tour-guide Judy was very nice and the tour was interesting despite the lack of any observable wine-making activity. There is a restaurant at the vineyard called the Harvest Grill. The menu looked good, but very pricey. We'll be prepared to eat there on our next visit.
Pros: This hotel is very nice and is in a great location. Right off of I-77 and only about 2 miles from Shelton Vineyards. The room was large and the bathroom was nice as well.
Cons: The front desk clerk at check-in was working on her computer so I stood about 4 feet from the counter waiting for her to look up. After about 30 - 45 seconds she didn't bother to greet me, but simply asked if I was ready. All other staff members were fine
Traveling as Couple
Pros: Location and staff were great
Cons: The bed could have used more pillows and being by the freeway, the room was a little noisy
Very Good
Senior Traveler
Pros: Location is great, right off the highway. If you like wine, it's in the middle of wine country. Good restaurants nearby. Included breakfast and gas station next door allows you to get up and going in a hurry.
Cons: Price was high. Unfortunately, we stopped the weekend of a local festival. So, rates were considerably higher than usual. Although I like the place and have often recommended it, it definitely is not worth paying the inflated rate.
Family with Young Children
Pros: Quiet, clean, great location
Cons: Only complaint is no movies for purchase on t.v.
