AAA Editor Notes
Fort Fisher State Historic Site, about 2 mi. s. at the end of US 421, was the largest earthen seacoast fortification of the Confederacy. Reputedly the scene of the largest naval bombardment and amphibious operation of the Civil War, the fort protected blockade runners en route to Wilmington with supplies before its fall in January 1865. The site features a monument commemorating the battle, a reconstructed gun emplacement and an interpretive history trail.

The visitor center contains an audiovisual show and displays, models and dioramas that illustrate the history of the fort and the role played by the blockade runners.
