Linville Caverns

Linville Caverns is at Milepost 317 at Linville Falls, N.C., then 4 mi. s. on US 221. In 1822 the spectacle of trout swimming in and out of the mountainside led settlers on a torch-lit expedition inside the caves. Ever since, their discovery has been a source of fascination, and sometimes shelter. During the Civil War, deserting soldiers from both armies sought refuge among the cathedral-like arches, columns and deep passageways.

The underground temperature is a constant 52 F; a jacket and comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
