Reed Gold Mine State Historic Site, 9621 Reed Mine Rd., is said to be the site of the first gold discovery in the United States, by a young boy in 1799. Gold was mined here from 1803 until 1912. A visitor center has an orientation video, exhibits and displays of historic mining equipment. Panning for gold is permitted April through October. Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
Museum and tour free. Gold panning $3.
Hours: Tues.-Sat. 9-5 (weather permitting). Closed major holidays.
