Reed Gold Mine State Historic Site, 9621 Reed Mine Rd., is said to be the site of the first gold discovery in the United States, by a young boy in 1799. Gold was mined here from 1803 until 1912. A visitor center has an orientation video, exhibits and displays of historic mining equipment. Panning for gold is permitted April through October. Guided tours are available. Picnicking is permitted.
Museum and tour free. Gold panning $3.
Hours: Tues.-Sat. 9-5 (weather permitting). Closed major holidays. Allow 1 hour minimum.
