North Carolina Transportation Museum, off I-85 exit 79 at 411 S. Salisbury St., traces the history of transportation in North Carolina. The complex, once Southern Railway's primary staging and repair facility, includes the massive Back Shop, the 37-bay Roundhouse and nine other buildings. Among the displays are Conestoga wagons, antique automobiles, steam locomotives and a dugout canoe. Changing exhibits also are offered throughout the year. Time: Allow 1 hour, 30 minutes minimum.
Museum only $6; $5 (ages 60+ and active military with ID); $4 (ages 3-12). Museum and train ride $12; $10 (ages 60+ and active military with ID); $8 (ages 3-12).
Hours: Museum and grounds Tues.-Sat. 9-5, Sun. 1-5, Mar.-Oct.; Wed.-Sat. 9-5, Sun. 1-5, Nov.-Dec.; Wed.-Sat. 9-5, rest of year. Train rides run Tues.-Sat. at 10:30, 11:30, 1:30 and 2:30, Sun. at 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30, early June-Labor Day; Thurs.-Fri. at 10:30, 11:30 and 1:30, Sat. at 10:30, 11:30, 1:30 and 2:30, Sun. at 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30, day after Labor Day-Dec. 31 and early Mar.-early June; Sat. at 11 and 1, rest of year.
