Bird Island Reserve is accessible from the southernmost end of Sunset Beach; walk .4-mi s.w. from the beach boardwalk access at Main and 40th sts. This 1,481-acre reserve sits on an undeveloped barrier island with dunes, salt marshes, tidal creeks, grassland and untouched shoreline. It is a protected nesting ground for loggerhead sea turtles and serves as an outdoor laboratory for researchers studying coastal ecosystems.
Note: Restroom facilities are not available. Bicycles are permitted.
Pet friendly (call for restrictions/fees.). Picnicking is permitted.
