St. Philips Heritage Center, at 900 Church St., is thought to be the oldest standing African-American church in the state. The brick structure was built in 1861; an adjacent reconstruction of the 1823 log church interprets the African-American experience in Moravian Salem.

Hours: Tues.-Sat. 9:30-4:30, Sun. 1-4:30. Closed Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas.
