J. Clark Salyer National Wildlife Refuge extends nearly 50 mi. along the Souris River to the Canadian border; headquarters is 2 mi. n. on SR 14 at 681 Salyer Rd. Peak waterfowl numbers can reach 500,000 in the fall at this 58,693-acre waterfowl sanctuary. Prominent nesters include mallards, songbirds, blue-winged teals and Canada geese. Upland game birds, shorebirds, small mammals and deer also are abundant. Maps for self-guiding driving tours are available.
