Fort Anne National Historic Site is 1 blk. n. of jct. hwys. 8 and 1. In the 1600s and 1700s both France and England viewed this as an important site for maintaining control of eastern Canada. The French built four forts on the site before it was seized by the British in 1710. Fort Anne was Nova Scotia's capital until 1749; the last regiment was withdrawn in 1854.

Surviving structures include well-preserved ramparts and bastions, a powder magazine and a storehouse. The Fort Anne Officers' Quarters Museum features exhibits about the Mi'kmaq, Acadians, planters and Loyalists and the historic power struggles and treaty negotiations that helped shaped this community. The Fort Anne Heritage Tapestry illustrates four centuries of area history. Monuments honor various figures from the fort's history. Special events include re-enactments.

Grounds are accessible year-round, weather permitting, and guided tours are available by appointment.

Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
