K.C. Irving Environmental Science Centre & Harriet Irving Botanical Gardens is off University Ave. on the campus of Acadia University. The 2-hectare (6-acre) botanical gardens contain nine habitats from the Acadia Forest region, including a sand barrens, a coniferous woodland and a marsh. Interpretive signs provide details about native plants and endangered species. A glassed-in winter garden and a medicinal and food garden also are on the grounds. The science center features greenhouses, a conservatory and botanical laboratories. Nature trails and picnic areas are available. Time: Allow 1 hour, 30 minutes minimum.

Hours: Gardens daily 7:30 a.m.-dusk, mid-Mar. to mid-Nov. (weather permitting). Hours may vary in winter; phone ahead. Science center daily 8 a.m.-10 p.m.
