York Redoubt National Historic Site is 13 km (8 mi.) s. on Hwy. 253 (Purcell's Cove Rd.). Established in 1793 on a bluff overlooking Halifax Harbour, this fortification was a key element in the city's defense. York Redoubt served as a training ground for Canadian troops during World War I and as the site of the Plotting Room and Fire Command Post for Halifax defenses during World War II. The site features muzzle-loading guns, a panoramic view of the harbor, interpretive panels and walking trails.

Comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen and insect repellent are recommended.

Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
