AAA Editor Notes
Grave of Mark Twain, facing East Hill in Woodlawn Cemetery at the n. end of Walnut St., is identified by a monument that is 12 feet high or “mark twain.” The expression, which Samuel Clemens adopted as his byline, refers to the 2-fathom (12-foot) water depth necessary for riverboats to pass through a river.

Clemens' son-in-law, the distinguished musician Ossip Gabrilowitsch, is buried at his request at Clemens' feet. Grave markers bear quotes from the author's works.
