Hower House is on the n.e. edge of the University of Akron campus at 60 Fir Hill. This 28-room Victorian mansion, designed in the Second Empire Italianate style, was built in 1871 by John Henry Hower, one of Akron's leading industrialists. The house contains octagonal rooms with oak parquet floors and black walnut woodwork. It is filled with Hower family furnishings and pieces from around the world. During the Christmas season wassail and cookies are served in the Cellar Door Parlor, and on select weekend days during the season, entertainment is offered. Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
$8; $6 (ages 65+); $2 (ages 6-18 and students with ID).
Hours: Guided tours depart Wed.-Sat. noon-3:30, Feb.-Dec. (also self-guiding tours some Sun. 1-4, Nov.-Dec.; phone ahead to confirm dates). Last tour begins 30 minutes before closing. Closed major holidays.
