Highlands Nature Sanctuary & Appalachian Forest Museum is 4 mi. w. on US 50, then 1 mi. s. to 7660 Cave Rd., following signs. This protected 2,200-acre natural area is operated by the Arc of Appalachia Preserve System and features trails leading to canyons, grottos and cliffs with outstanding wildflower displays. The museum features fine-art murals that bring to life the most significant features of America's Eastern Forest.
Three one-quarter-mile trails with flights of stairs lead into the scenic Rocky Fork Gorge and an ancient forest; they do not accommodate strollers. Pets are not permitted.
