AAA Inspector Notes
Inspector Pick (Eclectic/Unusual): I enjoy the traditional ambience of this historic tavern including dining rooms decorated with antique furniture, implements and embroidered samplers.
Historic. Founded in 1803 as a stagecoach tavern, this popular red brick inn serves an array of traditional dishes such as braised lamb and roast turkey. Over the course of the past two centuries, the inn has been visited by many dignitaries including several presidents, Henry Clay and Charles Dickens. In the early 19th century, when this restaurant was a temperance tavern, Mr. Dickens allegedly departed when he could not obtain any adult libations. Today, the novelist would appreciate the full bar. The Black Horse Tavern at the rear of the inn has a separate tavern menu.
