AAA Inspector Notes
Historic. Founded in 1803 as a stagecoach tavern, this popular red brick inn serves a mixture of traditional dishes such as roast lamb and duck breast, as well as some more sophisticated fare including game dishes. Be sure to check out the seasonal prix fixe menus. The Black Horse Tavern at the rear of the inn has a separate tavern menu. Over the course of the past two centuries, the inn has been visited by many dignitaries including several presidents, Henry Clay and Charles Dickens. In the early 19th century, this was a temperance tavern; Mr. Dickens left when he could not obtain any adult libations.
