National Museum of the Great Lakes, 1701 Front St., has extensive exhibits about Great Lakes history. It is also home to SS Col. James M. Schoonmaker, which was launched in 1911 and retired in 1980. It has been refurbished to depict how the biggest, most modern ship on the Great Lakes looked in its day.
