Wilberforce University In 1856 the Methodist Episcopal Church purchased a tract of land in southwest Ohio for the purpose of opening a college, then known as Ohio African University, for escaped and freed slaves. This college, the first African-American university in the country, is now Wilberforce University, named after the 18th-century British abolitionist William Wilberforce.
