AAA Editor Notes
Washita Battlefield National Historic Site, 2 mi. w. on SR 47A, is the site of Lt. Col. George A. Custer's 1868 charge on the sleeping Cheyenne village of Chief Black Kettle, the first attack in an attempt to halt rebellious acts by the Cheyenne and Arapaho on Kansas settlers. Custer's attack set the stage for his defeat 8 years later at Little Big Horn.

The visitor center, .9 mile west on SR 47A, also serves as the headquarters for Black Kettle National Grassland. The center has panoramic views of the Washita River Valley and features exhibits and a 27-minute film “Destiny at Dawn: Loss and Victory on the Washita,” detailing the events leading to Custer's charge.

Self-guiding tours are available. An overlook pavilion at the battlefield site on SR 47A is the beginning of a 1.5-mile self-guiding loop trail.

Picnicking is permitted.
