Castle Kilbride National Historic Site

Castle Kilbride National Historic Site is at 60 Snyder's Rd. W.; from Hwy. 7/8 turn n. onto Regional Rd. 51 and follow signs. This restored 1877 Italianate mansion was the home of James Livingston, the “Flax Mill King” of Canada. Guided tours offer details about the restoration, the antique furnishings and the life of the Livingstons.
The house is noted for its three-dimensional trompe l'oeil artwork. Of special interest are the walls and ceiling of the library, where scarcely a square inch is unpainted. The belvedere has a small art gallery, and the Wilmot Historical Museum in the basement features exhibits of local interest and displays of township artifacts.
