Backus Heritage Conservation Area is at 1267 Backus Mill Rd. The scenic and historic park features the John Backhouse Mill; a pioneer village with log houses, a blacksmith shop, the Backus Homestead and an octagonal schoolhouse; swimming; 12 kilometres (7.5 mi.) of nature trails; cross-country skiing; and fishing. A museum features storefronts and area history, and a nature center has displays about waterfowl, wildlife and area ecology.Backus Woods is said to be one of the best remaining examples of Carolinian forest in Canada. Guided walks are offered seasonally. Camping is permitted. Picnicking is permitted.

Hours: Nature center Wed.-Sun. 11-4:30, July 1-Labour Day. Conservation area open May 1-Oct. 15 for day-use and camping.
