Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site, from the International Bridge, s. on Huron St. then just e. to 1 Canal Dr., interprets the many technological firsts and accomplishments related to the canal's 1887-95 construction and operation. The canal was converted to small craft use in 1998. The original buildings, a self-guiding nature trail and a visitor center are on the site. Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
Free. Guided tours $2.90. A parking fee is charged.
Hours: Visitor Centre daily 10-6, July 1-Labour Day; Mon.-Fri. 10-6, mid-May through June 30 and day after Labour Day-early Oct. Guided tours daily at 11 and 2, July-Aug.; by appointment rest of year. Closed Jan. 1, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Christmas and day after Christmas. Hours and fees may vary; phone ahead.
