Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site, from the International Bridge, s. on Huron St. then just e. on Canal Dr., interprets the many technological firsts and accomplishments related to the canal's 1887-95 construction and operation. The canal was converted to small craft use in 1998. The original buildings, a self-guiding nature trail and a visitor center are on the site. Guided tours are available.
Free. Guided tours $2.90.
Hours: Visitor Centre daily 10-5, July 1-Labour Day; Mon.-Fri. 10-5, mid-May through June 30; Mon.-Fri. 10-4, day after Labour Day-early Oct. Closed Jan. 1, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Christmas and day after Christmas. Hours and fees may vary; phone ahead. Allow 1 hour minimum.
