Toronto Zoo is 1.6 km (1 mi.) n. of Hwy. 401 off Meadowvale Rd. The zoo's 287 hectares (710 acres) contain more than 5,000 animals representing more than 450 species in natural habitat displays. Exhibit areas include seven themed geographic regions—Indo-Malaya; Africa, featuring the Gorilla Rainforest; the Americas; Australasia, featuring the Great Barrier Reef; African Savanna; Eurasia; and the Canadian Domain. The Xie Shou Giant Panda Experience houses a pair of giant pandas and is very popular. A popular way to see the zoo is aboard one of the seasonal Zoomobiles. Camel and pony rides also are offered seasonally. The Discovery Zone features a children's zoo, Waterside Theatre and Splash Island water play area, available seasonally. Wild Connections, new in 2015, features an augmented reality experience—the first of its kind in Canada—that puts you virtually among wild animals using images from National Geographic photographers. Stroller, wagon and wheelchair rentals are available. Picnicking is permitted. Food is available. Time: Allow 4 hours minimum.
Admission May-Oct. $28; $23 (ages 65+); $18 (ages 3-12). Rest of year $23; $18 (ages 65+); $14 (ages 3-12) rest of year. Wild Connections $4.42 (ages 3+). Prices may vary; phone ahead. Parking: $10.
