Newberry Crater is 22 mi. s. of Bend and about 13 mi. e. of US 97 on CR 21 within Deschutes National Forest. The huge caldera is the location of Paulina and East lakes. These lakes are separated by cinder cones and a large obsidian flow of more recent geological occurrence. They are popular areas for camping, hiking and fishing. Visitors can view Paulina Falls from an observation point off FR 21.
Day-use pass (includes all Deschutes National Forest sites) $5 (per private vehicle).
Hours: The caldera can be accessed late Apr.-Oct. 31 (weather permitting). In winter and early spring visitors can drive 10 miles toward the caldera and then must either snowshoe, snowmobile or cross-country ski the last 3 miles to view the caldera; phone for additional information about access. Paulina Visitor Center open daily 10-5, mid-June through Labor Day; daily 10-4, day after Labor Day-Sept. 30; Sat.-Sun. 10-5, Oct. 1 through mid-Oct.; Sat.-Sun. and holidays 10-4, Memorial Day through mid-June. Phone ahead to confirm schedule.
