Oregon Rail Heritage Center is at 2250 S.E. Water Ave., at the east end of the Tilikum Bridge. Come and watch volunteers painstakingly maintain and restore the locomotives of the past. The SP&S 700 (one of the largest steam locomotives still operable today), the OR&N 197 and the SP 4449 (which pulled the 1976 bicentennial train across the U.S.) are on display along with other passenger cars and visiting locomotives.

Visitors can read railway history displays, speak with volunteers, climb up to peek inside a train cab and pose for pictures in front of drive wheels taller than many guests. The young and young-at-heart alike thrill at seeing these giants and then hearing the passing Amtrak and freight trains lay on their whistles. See these engines in action when they pull a host of passenger cars in the Holiday Express in early December.

Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
