AAA Editor Notes
Thompson's Mills State Heritage Site is 2 mi. e. at 32655 Boston Mill Dr. Built in 1858, the site's water-powered grain mill is Oregon's oldest. The mill's system of waterways, gates, ditches and dikes routes water from the Calapooia River to a millrace where it is used to power the mill's moving parts. Interpretive panels and hands-on exhibits relate the story of the mill's keepers and area farmers. Some areas of the mill not normally viewable may be seen during guided tours.
Inside the mill, original milling machinery and various examples of woodwork construction are displayed. A 1904 Queen Anne-style house and carriage house also are on the premises, though both are closed to the public.
Guided tours are available. Picnicking is permitted.
