Mount Angel Abbey is off I-5 exit 271, s. on SR 214 to Mount Angel, then 1 mi. e. on College Rd. to One Abbey Dr. Founded in 1882 by Benedictine monks, the abbey rests on a hilltop providing sweeping views of the Willamette Valley and snowcapped Cascade volcanoes. A self-guiding walking tour includes the guesthouse, library, monastery, museum and church. Abbey Drive includes a Stations of the Cross path. The library, one of only two buildings in the nation designed by renowned Finnish architect Alvar Aalto, contains rare manuscripts and extensive collections in theology and philosophy. The bell tower, which stands more than 120 feet high, houses eight bells that ring six times a day.
