Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine and Steam Train Ride, 4 blks. s. off SR 61, following signs to jct. 20th and Oak sts., offers a tour through a coal mine in battery-powered mine cars. Another tour features a 1920s steam train pulling mine nearly a mile around a mountainside to an abandoned strip mine and bootleg coal hole. Smoke from a perpetual underground coal fire is visible.
Note: Mine temperatures range from 48 to 52 degrees Fahrenheit.
Guided tours are available. Picnicking is permitted. Food is available. Time: Allow 1 hour, 30 minutes minimum.
