Fonthill Castle, E. Court St. at SR 313 (Swamp Rd.), is the castle-like dream house of Henry Mercer. Built in 1912, this concrete mansion was designed by the owner from the inside out; he designed the interiors of the rooms and then planned the exteriors to accommodate them. The multilevel dwelling, which can be explored only on a guided tour, has more than 44 rooms, 32 stairways and more than 200 windows. Mercer’s own Arts and Crafts tiles embellish walls and ceilings throughout; prints and objects from Mercer's life also are featured. Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
$15; $13 (ages 65+); $8 (ages 6-17). Combination ticket with Mercer Museum $26; $15 (ages 6-17. Reservations are required.
Hours: Tours Mon.-Sat. 10-5, Sun. noon-5. Last tour begins 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes before closing. Closed Jan. 1, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
