The State Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 North St., presents Pennsylvania's heritage from the Earth's beginning to the present. Archeological artifacts, decorative arts, fine art galleries and industrial and technological innovations can be seen. A Civil War exhibit includes Peter F. Rothermel's 1870 “The Battle of Gettysburg: Pickett's Charge” painting. Curiosity Connection is a hands-on learning environment for children ages 5 and younger. Additional features are Nature Lab, Mammal Hall, a restored mastodon skeleton and a planetarium. Time: Allow 2 hours minimum.
Museum $7; $6 (ages 65+); $5 (ages 1-11); free (retired or active military with ID). Planetarium additional $3.
Hours: Wed.-Sat. 9-5, Sun. noon-5. Planetarium shows are offered Wed.-Fri. at 11 and noon; Sat. on the hour 11-2, Sun. at 1 and 2. Curiosity Connection Wed.-Sat. 10-4, Sun. noon-4. Closed state holidays.
