Mercersburg Academy, 10 mi. w. on SR 16, is an independent coeducational secondary school (boarding school) and the site of President James Buchanan's 1791 log cabin birthplace, which was moved from its original location. The interior is not open to the public, but visitors can look through a window to see inside the mostly unfurnished cabin. A plaque contains information about the structure. Also on campus is the McFadden Model Railroad Museum, containing Lionel trains and accessories, including 148 engines and more than 500 cars. Concerts and performances are offered at the Burgin Center for the Arts. The academy chapel houses a 50-bell carillon. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
