AAA Editor Notes
Germantown Historical Society and Historic Germantown, 5501 Germantown Ave. on Market Sq., features a research library/archives and a small exhibit area with a decorative arts collection depicting Germantown history through the centuries. Germantown was the scene of the Revolutionary Battle of Germantown, the birthplace of writer Louisa May Alcott and home to an Underground Railroad stop.

America’s first German settlement, Germantown later became inhabited by members of English, Irish, Italian and African American populations; architectural styles reflect the influences of these different cultural groups. Sixteen historic sites comprise historic Germantown.
