Germantown Historical Society and Historic Germantown, 5501 Germantown Ave. on Market Sq., features a research library/archives and a small exhibit area with a decorative arts collection depicting Germantown history through the centuries. Germantown was America's first German settlement, the scene of the Revolutionary Battle of Germantown, the birthplace of writer Louisa May Alcott and an Underground Railroad site. Settled mainly by Germans and the Dutch, many of Germantown's old houses are distinguished by Dutch doors and arched cellar windows. It is home to 16 historic sites.
Museum $3. Library research fee $10; $5 (students with ID).
Hours: Museum, library and archives Tues. 9-1, Thurs. and first Sun. of each month, 1-5, second Sat. of each month, noon-4.
