Second Bank of the United States Portrait Gallery is at 420 Chestnut St. within Independence National Historical Park. The 1824 structure, modeled after the Parthenon, now houses the People of Independence Portrait Gallery. Some 185 late 18th- and early 19th-century portraits, many by Charles Willson Peale, illustrate Philadelphia's role as the capital city 1790-1800. Many of the portraits represent members of the military and signers of the Declaration of Independence and Constitution. Works by artists James Sharples and Thomas Sully also are included.
