The Athenaeum of Philadelphia, 219 S. 6th St., is named for Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom. Built in 1847, this three-story Italianate Revival building houses American fine and decorative arts from the first half of the 19th century and a research library and reading room. Changing exhibits can be seen in the first-floor gallery. Guided tours are offered by appointment. Time: Allow 30 minutes minimum.

Hours: Mon.-Fri. 9-5 (also first three Sat. of the month 11-3, Sept.-June). Closed major holidays, Good Friday, day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Dec. 31. Research by appointment only.
