University of Pennsylvania, bounded by Chestnut, Pine, 32nd and 40th sts., was founded in 1740 and is considered to be one of the nation's leading educational centers. In 1765 the country's first medical school was established here. The 269-acre main campus in west Philadelphia is comprised of 151 buildings including the University of Pennsylvania Hospital. Tours of the campus are available through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at 1 College Hall.
