University of Pennsylvania, bounded by Chestnut, Pine, 32nd and 40th sts., was founded in 1740 and is considered to be one of the nation's leading educational centers. In 1765 the country's first medical school was established here. The 299-acre main campus in west Philadelphia is composed of 215 buildings and the University of Pennsylvania Hospital.
