AAA Editor Notes

The Arboretum at Penn State lies on the n.w. section of campus between Shortlidge and Bigler rds. Due to the great size of the project, portions of the 370-acre site are opening in phases. The 35-acre H.O. Smith Botanic Gardens is open, and it features more than 700 species and 17,000 plants, an overlook pavilion, fountain, boardwalk, rose and fragrance garden, lotus pond, esplanade, sub-tropical-themed terrace and pollinators' gardens. The Childhood's Gate Children's Garden is designed for visitors from ages 3 to 12, and includes information about the region's biodiversity. The main biking and hiking trail is the Bellefonte Central Rail Trail, a 1.3-mile crushed-limestone path following the old railroad bed. Future additions will include additional themed gardens, an education center and a conservatory. Docent-led tours are sometimes available with 2 weeks' advance notice. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
Donations. Fees may be charged for tours.
Hours: Daily dawn-dusk (weather permitting).
