The Citadel of Québec
AAA Editor Notes
The Citadel of Québec (La Citadelle) is on the Cap Diamant promontory; the entrance is off rue St-Louis at Porte St-Louis at 1 Côte de la Citadelle. Constructed 1820-52, on the site of 17th-century French defenses, the fortification is one of the two official residences of the governor general of Canada. It remains the largest fortification in North America garrisoned by regular troops.
The Royal 22nd Regiment Museum, located in the East Casemate at the Citadel's entrance, offers modern interactive displays portraying the history of the city, The Citadel of Québec and the Royal 22nd Regiment. The exhibit "I Remember" ("Je me Souviens") follows the history of the regiment through the past 100 years. Lantern-lit night tours, offered during summer and fall, are more theatrical, featuring characters and stories from the past. During the summer months, musical performances by the Royal 22nd Regiment Band are presented.
Note: Guided tours in both English and French are available hourly.
Guided tours are available. Food is available.
